Howard

Born in Rochdale in 1945, Howard Butterworth is a renowned Scottish artist and has lived and painted professionally in Northern Scotland since 1968. Howard captures the atmospheric light and colours in his artwork of Scotland. Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Royal Deeside, Cairngorms National Park, the Scottish Highlands and other well known favourite places in Scotland. Capturing the moods and seasons as only an Aberdeenshire based artist painting outdoors can. Painting his original fine art mostly in oils, 'en plein air', his description of his style of painting as "emotional realism" conveys the sense of being in a particular place at a particular moment in time and the experience and feeling of Nature's constantly changing colours and light. Over the years he has painted and exhibited his original art for sale frequently in Scotland and Spain – to where he travelled across Europe to paint the almond blossom each spring. His artwork has increased in popularity worldwide, particularly his paintings of Scotland including those of native birchwoods, Caledonian pine forests, heather covered moorland and snowcapped mountains with the lively waters and bridges of Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire. Equally popular are his Scottish original oil paintings and watercolour paintings of the West Coast, historic castles, harbours, and city street scenes. His work spans the whole of Scotland and parts of Europe and Howard's patrons include private and corporate buyers with several works featuring in the Royal Collections of H.M. Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who closely supported him over the years.
