Sunrise to Sunset - An exhibition of Scottish oil paintings

The title and concept for this retrospective exhibition came from the discovery of two paintings in the family collection painted en plein air, both on the longest day in the 1980s.  Howard had stayed up to experience and capture the beauty of the Summer Solstice. The first of the duo was painted at sunset and the second canvas was created in the early hours of the morning so early that he captured bats still flying over the artists hen shed as a new dawn began.

 

The paintings at opposite ends of the day - one at dawn and one at dusk illustrate Howard's connection to the landscape and his fascination with light and time, and sense of place. Howard's love of capturing moments of light in the landscape at all hours and seasons is evident across his archive, and this retrospective exhibition includes work  from his travels to the West Coast of Scotland, Skye and Mull, his Royal Deeside home and garden near Ballater, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, Old Aberdeen, Lochnagar, and the well loved River Dee.
